For Kevin Rathbun and his wife, Melissa, designer Joel Kelly interprets old New Orleans style in a contemporary vernacular

For Kevin Rathbun and his wife, Melissa, designer Joel Kelly interprets old New Orleans style in a contemporary vernacular

A sweeping glance of Melissa and Kevin Rathbun’s Morningside kitchen belies the diversity it represents. She, who loves all that is New Orleans, wanted to incorporate elements of the city’s rich architecture, while he—one of Atlanta’s most celebrated chefs—was steadfast in his desire for clean, modern style. As it turns out, however, there was no need for compromise; thanks to the deft hand of architect/designer Joel Kelly, the two diverse viewpoints coexist beautifully, creating one extraordinary space.

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles builds a new kitchen in the heart of Phipps Plaza

During the month of may, the Center Court at Phipps Plaza was home to the 2012 Dream Kitchen, sponsored by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. Designed and built by Inspirations Kitchen & Bath Studio, with interior design by John Fernandez and Jennifer True, the space was a living laboratory for showcasing the latest design trends for today’s lifestyles. For this ephemeral space—the third one built at the mall in as many years—the design teams chose rich textures, lively patterns and sleek fixtures and hardware.

This year’s best kitchens look open and airy, polished and pretty, and free-flowing. Each of our winners is meticulously tailored to the needs of its owners, with storage and function in places that weren’t even supposed to be spaces. Go ahead and take cooking out of the equation; these rooms have a level of comfort and sophistication that rivals anywhere else in the house. These kitchens were designed for living.
