Designer John Oetgen

When Southern Homes premiered almost 25 years ago, John Oetgen was one of the first designers on our radar. Our name may have changed since then, but Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles still keeps tabs on his innovative projects, the latest of which is nothing short of dazzling—Trois. Here, the designer stands atop one of the custom-built ottomans he designed for the three-story restaurant, which is the brainchild of Bob Amick and Todd Rushing. Trois opened November 13th at 1180 Peachtree Street in Midtown.

"I was able to design the rugs for the bar through Stark Carpets. Kim Reeder with Stark allows me many opportunities to realize my vision with pattern, color, texture and especially quality. I also elicited the work of Tecnosedia for the custom banquettes and seating, which I designed for the space, and always Lindsey Marshall for the curtains," says Oetgen.

"I wanted the bar to be filled with candle stands, so I designed 14 individual pieces—some modernist, some baroque and some of a more human or organic nature," says Oetgen. "Charles Calhoun saw this through to the final product and they are drop dead!" Besides Calhoun, Oetgen partnered up with some of Atlanta's most talented designers: John Lineweaver, who created the logos and menus; Joe Blount and Chip Cheatham, owners of PierceMartin, who created the lacquered tree trunk hostess desk; and David Weeks, whose chandeliers and sconces graces each level.

Oetgen designed the constellation pattern in the lighted stainless steel floor of The Bar at Trois. The restaurant, appropriately so, has three floors. Trois, the dining room, is on the second floor; Above Trois, on the third level, is reserved for private parties. Here, sheer curtains allow the liquid leather silver upholstery on the small occasional chairs to shine.
