Lofty Living

Text: By Elizabeth

After spending too much time breathing in the cool October air and admiring the lights of Atlanta’s downtown skyline while sipping wine from the third-floor balcony of Calvin Lockwood and Steve Messer’s absolutely fabulous Castleberry Hill loft on Friday night, even my Buckhead-born and bred boyfriend was ready to trade in the backyard and strip malls of suburbia for the exposed brick walls, enormously high ceilings and within-walking distance galleries and eateries that this former warehouse district offers. (Although we also found ourselves measuring space on his walls for some of Lockwood’s supercool photographs from his first-floor gallery!)

It’s pretty unbelievable that the foresighted pair bought the building back in ’93, and it makes me wonder what will become of the city’s newer buildings that will soon find themselves vacant, such as GSU’s University Village dorms, built just 10 years ago to house Olympic athletes…I also find it somewhat disconcerting that the school’s own president’s excuse is that the building is “just too far away” from campus. Estimated mileage, anyone?
