Deconstructing the . . . Green Living Room

The formal living room of this environmentally friendly home, used often for entertaining, honors the old and the new with its high-style mix of sustainable elements, antiques and inherited pieces.

Beams  Reclaimed heart pine rafters and floors from the 18th century add European flair and patina to the two-year-old home.

Earthy Palette  Designer Smith Hanes created an of-the-earth palette for the large space, which boasts a pair of French doors that open to the outside. Linen draperies echo earthy color, while blue upholstery and a faded Oriental suggest hues of water and fire.

Paint  Walls were treated in Benjamin Moore’s low-VOC Eco-Spec line, complementing the neutral earth tones of the linen draperies.

Art  The homeowners for years have collected works by Chattahoochee Hill Country-based artists Tom Swanston and Gail Foster, whose gallery, Studio Swan, is located across the street; studioswan.com.

Textiles  The homeowners rebuilt and reupholstered inherited pieces of furniture and antiques with natural fibers, such as linens or wool; none of the textiles incorporate rayon or polyester.
