Creating a Lovely Living Space
Some top Atlanta designers demonstrate their knacks for gracious design in these 2008 Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House rooms

Library
Simple, Stately and Chic
In this library, custom millwork sets the tone for a comfortable living space. A beautiful reflection of Stan Topol's design principles, this room—which dramatically plays light against dark neutral hues—is simple but sophisticated, chic yet understated. “Glamour doesn't have to be flashy,” says the designer. “We believe that style does not mean that one has to be stylish.”

Grand Salon
Classic, Modern and Luxurious
In the grand salon, Suzanne Kasler combines classic, vintage and contemporary elements in an effortless showing of of-the-moment elegance. Antique Swedish columns fronting the grand Palladian windows play to the room's incredible architecture, including a French limestone mantel, while furnishings from Kasler's own collections for Visual Comfort and Hickory Chair exude individuality without losing their reverence for historical motifs. Finally, metallic gray draperies, unquestionably on-trend, add the kind of sparkle that's at home in any setting.

Keeping Room
Soft, Subtle and Inviting
The keeping room is a low-key, calming environment where guests are received; a linen-wrapped sofa and rolled-arm chairs decked out in hand-painted fabric take their places atop an equally subdued mohair rug. But punctuated by dark, commanding case goods, this room has high impact, too. Still, designer Gretchen Edwards says her favorite element is the mix of colorful, contemporary artwork by five different artists. It gives the room a modern spin and engaging verve that opens up the conversation.

Upstairs Lounge
Comfortable, Warm and Relaxing
A mix of touchable textures in Jimmy Stanton's upstairs lounge creates an inviting haven for conversing with friends or simply unwinding. The relaxed appeal of the linen-draped sofa has a transitional look that sits well with both traditional and contemporary interiors. The room gains rustic appeal from found objects recycled and re-used in unique ways—mounted artfully, dressed up with new materials, and arranged around the room as intriguing accents. But the indisputable focal point is Ray Hartl's photography, injecting personality in a graphic way.

Loggia
Intimate, Vibrant and Unexpected
In the loggia, gold, aqua and purple add vivacity to the home's classic scheme. A daybed suspended from the ceiling renders this space the perfect place to relax. But what makes it so current, says designer Loren Taylor, is the idea that an exterior space should be as inviting as any interior. “People are discovering home again; we are traveling less, because of the economy, and finding pleasure in our own nests.”
