Connoisseur's Choice - Ryan Mullins

Murphy’s - Sommelier

August 2007

The philosophy behind your wine list: The philosophy of Murphy’s wine list is to have balance in the selections offered and also highlight artisan producers from all over the world.

The biggest trend in 2006: New World, high end Pinot Noir was a huge trend in 2006.

Wines I’m drinking now: I’m really enjoying 1998 Francois LeClerc La Viuex St. Jacques Premier Cru Burgundy, a 2001 La Spinetta Vigneto Campe Barolo and Jean Milan Grand Cru Blanc de Blanc Champagne.

Favorite wine word (descriptive): “Gulpable” is my favorite wine word right now.  It means that the wine is ultra-smooth and delicious.

The quintessential pairing: San Alejandro Old Vine Las Rocas Garnacha and Murphy’s 10 Spiced Shrimp are a great combination.  The Garnacha compliments the spicy kick of the shrimp.

The bottle I can’t wait to uncork in 2007: 1990 Shafer Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon is one wine I’m really excited to try.

Next new thing in wine: Small production grower Champagne is going to be a big new trend, I think.  People really care about where their product comes from, and getting the fruit from small production growers of Champagne grapes implies high quality and meticulous attention to detail.
