Connoisseur's Choice - Doug Strickland

Eno Wine Director/Owner Doug Strickland explains how the wine lists at ENO and Barrelman Wine and Cheese Shop focus on European-Mediterranean varietals, both old world and new.

August 2007

The philosophy behind your wine list: Our lists at ENO and Barrelman Wine and Cheese Shop focus on European-Mediterranean varietals, both old world and new. We also try to represent most primary growing regions with an emphasis on varietal character and terrior driven wines.

The biggest trend in 2006: New world pinot noir continued to lead consumer trends. Spain, Latin America, self-sustaining viticulture, an increasing number of grower-producers, and consumer’s willingness to try new things seem to also be at the forefront.

Wines I’m drinking now: With our “No Corkage Fee” policy on Sundays I am frequently invited to have a taste of a variety of older vintage wines from my customers’ cellars. It is fun! At home, it’s a mixed bag depending on whether I am walking the dog or pan roasting doves! If in doubt, drink it!

Favorite wine word (descriptive): Balance. When it is all said and done, balance sums it all up – at any price point.

The bottle I can’t wait to uncork in 2007:
My wife, Brenda, and I will be in Venice, at Da Fiore, for our tenth Anniversary in March. The list will dictate the wine. Vintage Champagne will definitely be involved. The rest is a secret!

Next new thing in wine: Beats me! In America, Syrah may become the new Pinot Noir. My wine wish? It would be nice to see constitutional wine laws in all states!
