Closely tied with wealth and power for centuries, the “red” of the Old World was actually a dirty orange; it wasn’t until the New World was conquered that red pigment—as we know it today—became available, as a result of discovering an indigenous insect, the cochineal. Its value was surpassed only by silver and gold and, without it, even Rembrandt’s masterworks would not have been the same.
