100 Years of Architecture in Atlanta

Text: By Elizabeth

Last week, the Atlanta chapter of the AIA (American Institute of
Architects) celebrated 100 years of architecture in Atlanta and announced 10 winners,
one for each decade, for the "Best Buildings." Winners,  chosen
from more than 200 nominees of structures built inside the
perimeter  from 1906 to 2006, included The Candler Building (1906)
in downtown Atlanta, the Fox (1929), the High (1983), and the most
recently completed building, 1180 Peachtree (2006). Announced at a time
when prime real estate is being snapped up and new construction and development is at an all-time high, one
can only hope that thoughtful, well-designed examples of architecture
in Atlanta will follow.
